Fugitive wanted for child rape may be in L.A.

The FBI was alerting the public Thursday about a fugitive wanted on five counts of child rape who may be in Los Angeles.

The bureau is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of John Joseph Hartin, a Dorchester, Mass., resident who has been on the run for 18 years. He has family and friends in Los Angeles, the FBI said.

In 1993, the Suffolk County district attorney’s office charged Hartin with five counts of statutory rape of a child. A federal arrest warrant was issued for Hartin on Dec. 18, 1997, charging him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution

Hartin is described as white, about 42 years old and 5 feet 8 inches tall. At the time of his disappearance, he weighed 200 pounds and had brown hair and brown eyes.

The FBI said he should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to call (800) CALL-FBI.
