Man accused of killing family was covered in blood, holding knife
August 30, 2012A man suspected of stabbing his estranged girlfriend and their two young children in Riverside was walking along the 91 Freeway wielding a knife and covered in blood shortly before being arrested, authorities said Thursday.
The suspect, a 23-year-old resident of Riverside County, was in stable condition after being shot by police, said John Samano, a detective with the Corona Police Department.
Investigators suspect that the man killed his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend, their 4-year-old son and their 1-year-old daughter inside a home in the 10400 block of Granger Court on the west side of Riverside. All three victims were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
About 7:20 a.m., a caller told Corona police that they saw a man holding a knife at the interchange of the 91 and 15 freeways, Samano said. He had climbed out of his car and was walking alongside the westbound lanes of the 91 Freeway, heading toward the Main Street exit, he added.
When police showed up, the man began running, Samano said. After a foot chase that lasted less than five minutes, he was shot by an officer and taken to Riverside Community Hospital.
Police recovered the knife at the scene, Samano said.
The victims’ names have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
