Armed Man Killed by Riverside Deputies After Domestic Dispute
November 25, 2013A 35-year-old man was shot dead by Riverside County sheriff’s deputies early Sunday after firing a rifle during a domestic dispute, according to a sheriff’s news release.
At 1:17 a.m., a woman reported that she was in a house in French Valley with two young children and a man who had fired his rifle at least once. While on the phone with the woman, a dispatcher heard several gunshots, the news release said. Neighbors also began calling to report gunfire.
When deputies arrived, the man, Otavis Hall, refused to speak to them. They could see him walking around inside the house holding the gun. Hall then opened the garage door and went outside, ignoring commands to drop his weapon. He pointed the rifle at deputies, who opened fire, according to the sheriff’s account.
Hall died at the scene. No one else was injured. The deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy, while an internal investigation is conducted.
