Girl’s body found beside bloody man in Long Beach
May 1, 2012The bloodied body of a young girl was discovered Saturday morning in a Long Beach parking lot next to a man who might be her father, who was still alive but suffering from self-inflicted wounds, police said.
The man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. The girl, believed to be about 9, had fatal cuts to her upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The man, whom Long Beach police declined to name, is believed to be the girl’s father or stepfather, said spokeswoman Nancy Pratt.
Officers arrived at the parking lot off Willow Street and Woodruff Avenue, next to the 405 Freeway and a church, after getting a call around 11 a.m. from a passerby.
Police would not say whether a weapon was found on scene. The man, who was also lying in the parking lot, is still at the hospital and in stable condition.
Both the man and the girl were Long Beach residents. Pratt said investigators were trying to determine a motive for the slaying. “That’s something we all want to know,” she said.
